Do you need helical piers for a deck or porch?
Decks and porches settle more often than houses do. Before assuming it is a soil problem, it is worth ruling out the three cheaper explanations.
Why attached structures settle first
When a foundation is excavated and then backfilled, the backfill never regains the density of undisturbed soil. It consolidates for years. Deck footings, porch slabs and stoops are frequently placed in exactly that zone, and they are light enough that their own weight does little to compact it.
Meanwhile the house next to them bears on undisturbed ground. The result is differential movement between two things that are physically attached, which is why the gap always seems to open at the ledger.
Rule these out first
- Framing: a sag in the middle of a span is a beam or joist problem, not a soil problem
- Rot and fasteners: a failing ledger or rotted post base mimics settlement and is a genuine safety issue
- Frost movement: a footing above frost depth can lift and drop seasonally without ever truly settling
If one corner is measurably and permanently lower, and the framing checks out, then support is the conversation.
Why helical suits light structures
Push piers need the structure's weight as a reaction force, and a deck does not have enough of it. Helical piers do not — they are rotated into place under their own installation equipment, so they work on structures weighing a fraction of a house. That is the practical reason helicals dominate this application.
New decks and porches
A correctly sized footing below the local frost depth in undisturbed soil is standard practice and often perfectly adequate. Helical supports become worth pricing when you are building over backfill near the foundation, on a slope, over previously disturbed ground, or where you want each support point verified as it is installed.
Questions to ask about a deck support quote
- Which specific posts or footings were measured, and what were the readings?
- Is the ledger connection being inspected as part of this work?
- Is a lift being attempted, and what is the realistic target?
- What happens to railings, steps and skirting during the work?
- What documentation comes with the finished installation?

Common questions
Is a deck pulling away from the house dangerous?
It can be. The ledger is the connection carrying deck load into the structure, and ledger failure is one of the more serious deck failure modes. Visible separation, rust staining or loose fasteners are reasons to limit use until the connection has been inspected.
Can a settled porch be lifted back up?
Often partially or fully, once supports are installed and loaded. Attached brick, railings and steps limit how much movement is safe. Agree the realistic target before work begins rather than hoping for full recovery.
Do pergolas and covered patios need the same support?
They face the same issue — concentrated loads on a few small footings, often placed in disturbed ground. Whether it justifies helical support depends on measured movement and on what the structure is carrying.
