Installation is where a helical system either earns its capacity or quietly fails to. The shaft is advanced until it develops the required resistance — depth is an outcome, not a number chosen in advance.
What we are actually looking for
A helical pier is a steel shaft with one or more helix plates welded to it. Hydraulic equipment rotates it into the ground much like a screw. As the plates pass through weak fill and into denser bearing soil, the torque required to keep turning rises, and that torque correlates with the pier's capacity.
This is the part that separates a designed installation from a sold one. If a proposal tells you the depth before anyone has turned a pier, it is describing a hope rather than a measurement.
When this is the right approach
- New additions, sunrooms and room bonuses adding load to undisturbed or filled ground
- Structures where the upper soils are weak but competent bearing exists at depth
- Sites with restricted access, since the equipment is comparatively small
- Projects where immediate loading matters and cure time is not available
- Work in cold or wet conditions where poured footings are impractical
When it is not
Being told you do not need a repair is a legitimate outcome of an assessment. These conditions point somewhere other than deep support:
- Sites where obstructions such as old foundations, rubble fill or boulders will stop the helix
- Loads better carried by a conventional spread footing at shallow depth
- Situations where the real problem is drainage or lateral pressure, not bearing capacity
A note on method. We would rather explain why a different trade should handle your problem than install support that does not address it. If that costs us the job, the assessment still gave you something useful.

Floor elevations, crack widths and directions, footing conditions where reachable, and drainage around the affected area.

What the numbers show, what is causing it, and which of the available methods addresses that cause — including the option of doing nothing yet.
Define the scope
Support locations, design load, equipment access, what gets excavated and what gets restored, in writing, before anyone starts.
Install and document
Installation proceeds to the torque criterion. You receive the location, depth and final torque for every support point.
Common questions
How deep do helical piers go?
There is no standard depth. Piers are advanced until the installation torque indicates the design capacity has been reached, which can be a handful of feet or well past twenty depending on the soil profile at that spot. Two piers ten feet apart on the same house can terminate at different depths.
What should the installation record contain?
At minimum: a plan showing each pier location, the final depth, the final installation torque, the shaft and helix configuration, and the bracket used. Keep that document with your property records. It is what a future buyer's inspector will ask for.
How much of my yard gets torn up?
Less than most people expect, but not nothing. Each pier location needs an excavation to expose the footing, plus an access path for equipment. Landscaping, irrigation and hardscape in the work zone should be identified and discussed before the crew arrives, not after.
Can piers be installed in winter?
Generally yes. Helical installation does not depend on concrete curing, so it tolerates cold better than many alternatives. Frozen surface ground and saturated site access are the practical limits, not the pier system itself.
