Helical piers vs push piers and other support systems

Different foundation problems need different tools. This is what each system actually does, and the conditions where each one is the sensible choice.

The four things people mean by 'foundation repair'

They are not interchangeable. Deep support carries load past weak soil. Slab lifting raises non-structural concrete and fills voids. Wall reinforcement resists inward pressure. Drainage correction removes the water driving the problem. A proposal that offers only one of these regardless of symptom is worth a second opinion.

Helical piers

A steel shaft with helix plates, rotated into the ground until installation torque indicates the design capacity has been reached. Because torque correlates with capacity, each pier is effectively verified as it goes in.

  • Strong for: light structures, porches, decks, additions, new construction, restricted access, immediate loading, cold-weather work
  • Limits: obstructions and rubble fill can refuse the helix; on very heavy structures the pier count can climb

Push piers (resistance piers)

Steel sections hydraulically driven into the ground using the weight of the structure itself as the reaction force. Capacity comes from driving resistance, and the structure has to be heavy enough to provide that reaction.

  • Strong for: heavy masonry homes, deep unsuitable soils, situations where the structure's own weight is an advantage
  • Limits: cannot be used on light structures such as porches, stoops and decks; cannot be installed before the structure exists

Slab lifting and void filling

Polyurethane foam or cementitious grout injected beneath a settled slab to fill voids and raise it. This is the right tool for non-structural concrete — patios, walkways, garage aprons, some basement floors. It is the wrong tool where a bearing element sits on the slab, or where the slab is settling as part of wider foundation movement.

Wall reinforcement

Carbon fibre straps, steel I-beams or wall anchors resisting inward deflection on a basement wall. This addresses lateral pressure. Piers address vertical settlement. Both can be present on one house, but each fixes only its own problem, and buying the wrong one fixes nothing.

How to tell which one you need

  • Is anything measurably lower than it used to be? → deep support territory
  • Is a wall bowing inward or cracked horizontally? → reinforcement, not piers
  • Is only non-structural concrete affected? → lifting, most likely
  • Is water reaching the foundation unmanaged? → correct that regardless of what else you do

Common questions

Which system lasts longer?

Both helical and push piers use steel designed for long service life. Durability is driven by corrosion protection, soil conditions and correct installation, not by which category of pier it is. Longevity claims in marketing are far less useful than the installation record.

Is one cheaper than the other?

It varies by project. Helical piers can be more efficient on lighter structures; push piers can be more efficient on heavy ones. Depth, access, pier count and site restoration usually influence the total more than the system choice does.

Can I get both quoted?

Yes, and on a borderline project it is a reasonable thing to ask for. If a contractor cannot explain why their system suits your structure specifically, that answer is worth more than the price.
